The end result is compliance in the pursuit of power - unchecked power in the face of an opposition lacking the ability compete in free and fair elections, whether through a twisted interpretation of law or cutting off of resources.

It's an old playbook. It's proven to work.

Why do you think they're coming after universities and civil society? These are critical components of a functioning and free democratic society, and thus anathema to technocratic fascism.

They will come after them all, enlisting their hordes of too-willing online thugs to silence them.

Or, they're owned by an oligarch with no political allegiances other than staying in the good graces of whomever is in power.

Either way, the result is the same - the institutions we've built to protect liberty in this country have been effectively eroded into irrelvancy.

Had a speech like Vance's been made at any time before this year, there would be front page editorials in major newspapers speaking out against it. Today, most mainsteam media outlets are afraid to speak out for fear of being sued or having the right wing noise machine pointed at them.
