Be kind. Be brave. Be creative!
My hunch is that students will learn better the limits of AI, some will stop using it, and some will learn to use it effectively.

(And your worst students are going to struggle, just like they did before.)

The other difference is you can stop trying to identify AI. Save yourself time!

Using a sewing machine doesn't make a fashion designer better at design, but it does help them do part of their job faster.

AI can't do much very well. Maybe that'll change, or maybe it won't. But let the students use it as a tool, and see how they do, together.

This kinda gets to the whole principle of specialized labor. When tech DOES something well, that's one less skill we have to master on our own!

It's good to have basic skills (sewing, arithmetic) but we should also use calculators and sewing machines.

For research papers, this is even better. AI can invent sources, but it's on the students to verify them. They might even wind up doing *more* research verifying the AI was correct.

And again, if you grade and find made-up sources? Bigger penalties.

If the goals are critical thinking and good writing, they can still strengthen those skills by editing. They miss out on the creating side, yes, but it's still good practice.

And then when you grade, grade more critically. Hold them to a higher standard on the skills AI can't do well.

AI is pretty good at, say, grammar. Other things, like a cohesive, consistent argument...it's hit-or-miss.

So instead of wasting time, let your students use it. But it's on THEM to proofread, review, make sure the arguments are valid.

Closest I've come to this is when I had a bad boss who wanted me to quit.

And if your arguments include "the blacks" as a generality...

Why have a cargo ship when you can have a *brand-new military-grade* "cargo" ship?

I'm so sorry for you, but I'm glad it's getting taken care of...finally.

And now this has me wondering if we need to advocate more for my wife, for a different set of medical challenges...

Love the idea, but it will be challenging for the "tough cases" in each group. You'd need to figure out some strategies to address potential issues. Luckily, all three groups already have strategies for their own groups, so that would be a good starting point.
