REMINDER - Turn your phone off & reboot at least once a week to improve its performance and make it harder for hackers to use malware & spyware on your phone. And remember, it's a passive listener. Hold important conversations in person away from phones & other devices.

bsky.app/profile/acts...
Get in the habit of turning off your cell phone (for at least 2 minutes) and rebooting it at minimum once a week. This allows it to clear its RAM and can clear out some (not all) malware, which in turn improves your phone's performance and can help prevent hacking. (1/6)

If they respond
(and they will respond)
to the mask you wear
and the precautions you take
by telling you
that at this point
nobody cares
about the pandemic anymore,
remember: the fact
that they feel so compelled
to tell you this
is because your actions
are proving them wrong.

It's said on the Statue of Liberty that America is a home of exiles...our nation has constantly taken positive steps forward on issues of racial justice & equality. But over & over again at the same time, it made backward steps...the persistence of white backlash.

Apparently in the UK
hospital admissions for flu
have hit a record high
with the NHS warning
that the UK must prepare
for the“worst year ever,”
but here across the pond
we are ready,
yes, here in the US
we are quite ready,
we are ready
to keep pretending
that everything is fine.

When you hear people say
(and you will hear people say)
that they’ve gotten sick
and now they wish
they had worn a mask,
calmly and kindly tell them
that they missed the chance
to prevent their current infection
but they can still wear a mask
to help prevent their next one.

I have heard that in Spain
they are bringing back masks
in hospitals, primary care,
and long term care environments,
but here in the US
we are bringing something back too
unfortunately
what we are bringing back here
seems to be yet another winter
of everyone falling ill.

I have been informed
that today
is a day for giving
and in that spirit
if you would like
to do something
to show you give a damn:
you can wear a mask,
and if you
really do give a damn
you can keep wearing it
even on the days
that are not
specifically for giving.

How're we doing?

What've you done this week to help someone else?

What've you done this week to help yourself?

Remember to breathe, move your body, hydrate, & find something to laugh about.

Before he ventured
into the cold
my colleague prepared:
he put on a heavy coat and a scarf,
he donned a hat and gloves,
and as I looked
at his unmasked face
I realized that he was willing
to take precautions
against the cold,
just not against
catching something
worse than a cold.

REMINDER - Giving Tuesday is great, but it's not practical for all organizations, especially small ones. Do your research, look at orgs working on issues important to you and evaluate their presence and impact, then, support them how you can when you can!

bsky.app/profile/acts...
In just 12 years, Giving Tuesday grew from being a simple Twitter hashtag in a fundraising campaign of New York's 92nd Street YMCA into a globally recognized day of giving. In recent years though, many smaller non-profit organizations have moved away from running big Giving Tuesday campaigns. (1/8)

As we talk
by our trash cans
my neighbor recounts
the deals he got
but he notes he’s worried
the steep discounts
are a recession indicator,
and then he notes
how everyone in the stores
was coughing,
and as he notes this I worry
that’s an indicator
something else is getting worse.

As we stood in line
at the supermarket
the woman behind me
looked at my mask
and said she was just getting over it,
and the man at the register
said he had it last month,
and the woman in front of me
said she just keeps getting it,
but no one seemed willing
to admit what “it” was.

As she recounted
a disappointing dinner party
my work friend asked
if I knew the feeling
of being with people
(of being with good people)
but still just feeling
profoundly alone,
and as I adjusted my mask
I looked
at my friend’s bare face
and simply said:
I know the feeling.

my brother-in-law changed the subject.

As I walked by
a masked man with a leaf-blower
paused his machine
looked at my mask
and inquired:
“protecting yourself
from folks blowing their leaves?”
and though I wanted to say:
“protecting myself
from folks blowing their noses,”
instead I just said:
“something like that.”
