It's a plot point, but I'm not sure it rises to the level of theme. Protecting the Shire is seen by the Dúnedain as a loving duty, akin to a parent protecting a child, and not as an act of patronizing arrogance. Luckey's attitude toward defending the Shire is less Aragorn and more Colonel Jessup.
