I recall that over a decade ago, @barackobama.bsky.social put out a vaguely favorable statement regarding net neutrality, and the Ajit Pai/Brendan Carr folks in the FCC absolutely lost their minds, screaming "WE'RE AN INDEPENDENT AGENCY, HOW DARE HE TRY TO INFLUENCE US."
And guess what?

The FCC immediately changed the website to state that the agency is not independent right after Carr's comments!

@tacobell.bsky.social is the worst customer experience. My girls like it so I’m often stuck in a long slow car line waiting to check in so I can wait in the car line some more to get to the window where they will tell me to pull around and wait some more at the side door. 30 minutes minimum.

We've long explored how powerful regional broadband monopolies have dominated America, resulting in spotty access, high prices, slow speeds, and terrible customer service. We've also long discussed how the U.S. government has done little to actually fix the problem, ranging from outright coddling monopolies (Trump) to performative fixes (the Biden FCC) that don't take aim at monopoly power. …

This is the correct “can we afford it” framing for everything.

We always do infinitely more to support each other than what shows up on balance sheets. If work is being done, the capacity is there to pay people for it by definition. And the distributive effects are pretty much always positive.
As the brilliant Michael Kinnucan points out, it's more than a bit strange that there's a debate over whether New York can afford universal childcare. New York already has universal childcare! Every single child is cared for by somebody. Small children are never left home all day by themselves.

@mmasnick.bsky.social the answer is context!

As an engineer, I deal with lots and lots of numbers. What brings value to my work is the context I bring to those numbers as I help project leaders make informed decisions.

A Memo To Corporate America: How To Stop Being Cartoon Villains
I’ve spent considerable time lately documenting how America’s corporate elite have transformed themselves into the exact cartoon villains that Marxists always claimed they were—groveling before authoritarian power, paying tribute to criminal regimes, abandoning every principle they’ve spent decades claiming to represent. But criticism without constructive alternatives is just intellectual masturbation, so let me offer some practical guidance for any CEO who might still possess a functioning moral compass.

DOGE’s “Efficiency” Theater: Wasted $21.7 Billion While Destroying Life-Saving Programs Based On Conspiracy Theories
We've talked plenty about how Elon Musk's “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) was always more about performative cruelty than actual efficiency. But a new Senate report reveals just how spectacularly DOGE failed at its supposed core mission while causing immeasurable human suffering in the process. The entire concept blew up more spectacularly than one of Musk’s Starships.
