Appropriation is a dominant (oppressor) group stealing the traditions/ideas from a group it has oppressed w/o paying back or acknowledging the harms inflicted on the oppressed group. Like white lady yoga, whites using AAVE, using Indigenous practices belonging to groups your ancestors oppressed.

I have been unlearning my white supremacist world view, including my #culturalappropriation. Have I practiced yoga in all-white, western rooms where the roots of Yoga are not discussed? Yup. Have I TAUGHT yoga and played hip hop without acknowledging the roots of those traditions? Um, yup.

I’ve caused harm assuming I’m enlightened; a “spiritual gangster,” when I’ve ignored the oppression of Black, Indigenous and people of color.
So, before you send “positive vibes,” reflect if you are willing to sacrifice safety or comfort to stand up for those more marginalized than you.

Well, I have used spiritual bypassing to ignore the harms I’ve caused by my racist actions. I’ve leaned into spiritual practices and yoga, feeling like I’m sending “love and light” and “positive vibes” to others while not unpacking or facing my participation in and benefiting from white supremacy.
