I've just posted my very first Substack. Take a look if you care to.

About Hubert Selby Jr. (Part one)
I want to tell you a little about Hubert Selby Jr. and, if you haven’t read him, why you should—or perhaps shouldn’t.

Writerly folk: what are your thoughts on author websites—whether a simple portfolio to showcase your books or an active blog with many posts? Do you have one or not? Do you want one or not? Are they pointless or worthwhile?

(Partly asking as someone who's built websites professionally.)

After a brief hiatus from Substack, I’m back with a review of Haruki Murakami’s Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki…(and the rest). Note: this is a review of the book, not the novel.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki: A Book Review
Haruki Murakami is not just an enjoyable set of vowels and consonants to say out loud, it is also the name of a popular author of contemporary fiction.

(Updated graphic). More to come. Though I should really be working on less silly things.

A pretty wild cover for the first US printing of Crash by J.G. Ballard. Published by Farrar Straus Giroux in 1973.

Happy Sunday! ICYMI, I began a new blog series (hopefully, it'll continue) on my Substack a few days ago. Written in the second person, it's a little unusual. This first entry concerns a camping trip to Aberystwyth, where I traipsed around bookstores, bought some books, and didn't get much sleep.

Mixed a batch of pizza dough this morning. Sourdough, for extra flavs. Firing up the Ooni later. First time this year.

A little blog about books: stores, shelves, collections.

Too Many Books
You begin to wonder (in second person) if you have a book-buying problem. Despite this, you spend two days in Aberystwyth and buy some more.

Knausgaard is an oddity. He is somehow capable of writing about his life unsparingly in the way most writers transpose and collage various aspects of themselves across multiple characters. Three down, three to go.

Kinda tired of seeing Musk's half-melted-looking face, among others, across my social feeds. It's bleak.

For those who admired Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, The Executioner’s Song by Norman Mailer is a ‘non-fiction novel’ about another case of American murder and capital punishment.

Back from a birthday break from social media 👋

In case you missed it (although this post has had more readers than typical—thanks for sharing, all), check out my top 5 books on where to begin with J.G. Ballard.

Highly recommend!

Ballard was one of the greatest "prophets" along with Philip K. Dick.

The Atrocity Exhibition (especially the REsearch edition), Crash, The Unlimited Dream Company and Super-Cannes are all a must read!

I would argue High-Rise or Concrete Island over the Drowned World

In case you missed it: my review of Terry Zwigoff's '94 documentary 'Crumb'.

While the film is fantastic, I'm not what you'd call a fan of Crumb himself.

Also, thanks generally to anyone who's stopped by the blog—especially those who've gone on to subscribe, comment and like the posts thus far.

It's taken some time and patience (plus a few bucks), but I've finally got my hands on a UK hardcover of Hubert Selby Jr.'s Requiem for a Dream, completing my collection.

If I manage to finish it, tomorrow's post is about Crumb, the Terry Zwigoff documentary. While I'm not what you'd call a fan of Crumb, the film is fantastic and has stayed with me since I first saw it over ten years ago.
