Eugene is holding a candlelight vigil Sunday evening, which is National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day, in honor of homeless residents who have died this year.

At the Farmers Market Pavilion, there will be a resource fair at 5 p.m., and a memorial service at 6 p.m.

Despite pouring rain and howling wind, community members gathered along the Ferry Street Bridge in Eugene Thursday chanting and holding signs that said “Immigrants welcome” and “No human being is illegal" in the first of five “Day Without An Immigrant” events.

Another in a series of windy, rainy storms moved into western Oregon on Thursday, bringing a new round of power outages and concerns over flooding.

The worst hit area on Thursday afternoon was Lincoln County, where more than 16,000 customers were in the dark.

Opponents of the Coffin Butte landfill expansion petitioned to overturn the county commissioners' November approval of the expansion. The county commissioners voted Tuesday to withdraw their approval to allow further discussion before it goes through the appeals process.

Unemployment in Lane County continued to follow a statewide growth trend in September.

The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the Eugene area reached 5%. Numbers have steadily increased since May 2023, when the area hit a recent low of 3.6%.

Hunter Communications, a Medford-based fiber optic internet service provider and the largest private internet provider in Oregon, has been acquired by Oak Hill, a private equity firm with a history of buying fiber optic internet providers and communications companies.

Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner were found dead inside their home in Brentwood, Calif. on Sunday afternoon.

Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and taken into custody. His bail has been set at $4 million.

The holiday season is underway, but Oregon’s ski areas are still waiting for snow. While the Pacific Northwest has had plenty of moisture, freezing levels haven’t stayed low enough to accumulate snow.

About 25 years ago, University of Oregon biology professor Alan Shanks started daily counts of baby Dungeness crabs washing ashore in Coos Bay. Over time, he found that the number of larval crabs counted through the summer correlates with the crab catch four years later.

The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center will be closed from Dec. 16 through mid-May. The site, south of Yachats along Highway 101, is run by the Siuslaw National Forest. It’s getting new flooring, upgraded accessibility, and fresh exhibits, all within a $60,000 budget.
