Today my 11 year old was like, does the F in F Scott Fitzgerald stand for “fuck”?

last evening my family and I were walking past my childhood home as a guy was coming out the front door. I stopped and said "I grew up here" and he was like "cool" and then he got into his new Audi and left. He should have invited me in to look around right?

It works. The government here largely works. Because we are so spoiled by how well it works, we are letting a fool convince us it is broken.
In 90 years of social security, we have never had a check bounce or be late, but they want you to believe the system is broken.

Because tomorrow is tax day I was thinking about my late father's best friend, Randy Kehler, who refused to pay federal income taxes as an act of protest. I hadn't heard he died last summer. What an inspiration Randy was and should continue to be! www.nytimes.com/2024/08/01/u...

Daniel Ellsberg was so moved by Mr. Kehler’s opposition to the Vietnam War that he decided to leak documents that changed the course of the conflict.

Every person with a working brain should be chilled to the bone by the government’s illegal capture and disappearing of this man. And every educator who works on a college campus should be enraged at this institutional cowardice and ready acquiescence.

all the talk about the attention economy etc misses the part about social media being a disciplinary technology, in terms of people's habits tastes behaviours. the book i'm writing is about this and i'm almost finished the first draft

How Does ‘Big-Reveal’ Content Shape Our Family Stories?

in like the 1998 congressional campaign Bernie's opponents made bumper stickers that said 'Bye Bye Bernie' and so Bernie's campaign made "response" ones that said "Aye Aye! Bernie!" My dad had one on his Subaru Impreza and I found it a bit cringe. In fact in retrospect I still kinda do.

Anyway that desire seems really powerful and I think it explains a lot of the dumb shit people do
I don't think people who throw gender reveal parties care about the fetus' sex at all. In fact I think these events have nothing whatsoever to do with gender essentialism. It's just a convenient way to make a "surprise" happen at a party. People just want something to "happen". That is all
