Thank you. That means a lot. I actually love helping clients through end-of-life decisions and would enjoy working in pet hospice one day. I can count on one hand the number of times I have cried with a client because I don’t want it to be about me, but this one was an exception.

Euthanasias increase during the holiday season anyway, but some of them are harder than most.

This was our THIRD euthanasia for the day, with one more scheduled for this afternoon. I usually have a heart of steel when it comes to euthanasias but damn, I’m struggling today.

He was a Marine and a Vietnam vet, and tells us the craziest stories every time he comes in. But my favorite stories involve his wife showing up with yet another Maine Coon and him not having the heart to say no.

I learned to see euthanasias as the final act of compassion we can give to an animal who’s sick or suffering. That’s the only way to process it when you see so many every day.

It definitely transformed me in ways I can’t completely explain. I can manage my compassion fatigue now, but that’s a lesson learned the hard way (like seeing so much death everyday). But there were so many good things, too, like pets coming back from the brink of death and my awesome coworkers.
