63,000 words is the equivalent to around 140 pages in a week.

I also had to buy a new keyboard last week because my old one gave up the ghost.

My stage manager had to write R and L and tape it up on some pillars for the show I'm currently directing.

Some things will never change.

ARGONAUTS by Maggie Nelson: 3.5/5

There's some moments of genuine heartwrenching beauty here, and Maggie Nelson's prose has always been the exact kind of thing that I love to engross myself into. But BLUETS remains my favorite work of hers still and this doesnt quite match up to that.

DEMON COPPERHEAD: 5/5

God, what an incredible book. I kept having to stop this to work on other things (shows, work, etc.) but every time I picked this back up, it felt like I was sinking back into Demon's sorry life filled with anguish, pain, and yes - joy. Might end up an all-time fave!

Well, here's my ballot for the Top Movies of the 21st Century (so far)...

FWIW - I have zero time for any ballot that doesn't include Paddington 2, which is a perfect encapsulation of cinematic joy that has ever been put to film.

Honorable Mention: Moonlight, Sing Sing, Perfect Days

In all my years living in Chicago (or Ohio) I have NEVER seen this warning before.

I knew our economy was likely heading towards a real-life version of Grapes of Wrath anyways, but this is ridiculous.

How you know a film/show set in Chicago had set designers that have never been to Chicago...

Agatha of Little Neon
by Claire Luchette
5/5 Stars

This story of a Catholic nun questioning both her place in the world and in the church is heartwarming without being saccharine and heartbreaking without being cruel.

In the end, all I wished for was the best for Agatha of Little Neon.

So far, I'm surprised how much I already knew. I always figured I was well below conversational, but maybe I am not as poor at it as I thought I was?

I am absolutely NOT fluent and won't pretend I am.

Nearly 300 pages of the titular character being emotionally and physically abused. With bonus scenes of couples therapy sessions written by someone whose idea of therapy is likely just what they saw on Dr. Phil or some other similar bullshit.

Shark Heart: A Love Story
By Emily Habeck
4.5/5 stars

An extraordinary debut work blending the absurd with romance and a deep and resonant treatsie about what it is to love someone or many someones whose encroaching terminal illness is affecting them and those they love.

Happy Letterboxd Friday!

1. Classic 90s thriller
2. Solid thriller marred by miscasting
3. Documentary about endurance athletes challenging themselves to a race so hard barely anyone has finished it
4. A personal all-time favorite movie

"The Starless Sea" by Erin Morgenstern
3.5/5 stars

When given beautiful prose the way this book gave it to me, I'm often willing to forgive a story's shortcomings. There's a lot to like here, but there's also a lot to dislike. Gorgeous writing but a frustrating main character.

I haven't been able to watch much this week; so busy!

1. The greatest war movie I've ever seen that absolutely destroyed me
2. A classic Bond film
3. An -okay- post-apocalyptic musical
4. Chris Farley does Hamlet better than Kenneth Branagh (I said what I said)

This is essentially Garth Ennis' CROSSED but with more subtlety. And if you've read this book, which really isn't subtle at all, you'll have an idea of how bad CROSSED was.

As for this book...

Sometimes, it is just cruel for cruelty's sake.

September House: 3.5/5

This book struggles tonally at times trying to figure out what it wants to be. It begins with a lot of humor and horror schlock and then turns into something more REAL and then into a mystery. And then it all unravels into a messy ending that somehow works!
