I've read all the books so it's really that character that I think of regardless of whichever actor is portraying him. But that's just me, everyone's different. Anyone should be able to watch any of the films without having to know all about some backstory or multiverse shite.

Nah, I never thought of it like that. Lazenby got married, yet Moore visited his wife's grave, Leiter says "he was married once" about Dalton's Bond, I think of it as the same person.
Doesn't really matter though, if that works for you then that's cool.
