The coastal forest in the fall used for inspiration.

During my residency, I would hike up Cascade Head and look out at the Salmon River Estuary after a day in the print studio. 🌿

Here she is ‘Attitude of Gratitude’
by London artist Fin DAC

The hair of this mural in SE Portland is made of thousands of living plants.🌱

Looks like she is actually five stories tall. One of my favorite murals in the city. #pdx

Last night out with a friend I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw what looks like the ‘Attitude of Gratitude’ mural in Portland ( that version is over two stories tall complete with living plants to make up her hair on the side of a building). Lovely to see a smaller version.

The living hair!

Wilkins did contribute to our understanding of the structure as did Gosling.

The real question is, if discovery requires building upon multiple lines of evidence and contributions: Why do we give so much deference to a Prize awarded to only three living people?

If you look at the text of the Double Helix, that ‘eureka’ moment implies a man with no depth in crystallography could magically glance and see a structure where Franklin could not from the photographs of the B form of DNA. (Watson’s book only says B form)

Read below.

Franklin was described in Watson’s account as ‘Rosy’ (a name she detested) and was unflattering and more importantly implied she did not understand her own work. (Maybe him owning his initial bias upon meeting her? IDK)

The Epilogue I added below.

"If you publish your book now, in the teeth of my opposition, history will condemn you”

“the tone used to describe Rosalind's work in the Epilogue
is perfectly reasonable,
but contrasts ludicrously with
the descriptions of her
in the text itself.”

Came upon a forest ranger documenting fungi. They had a list of species they were cataloging. The cauliflower 🍄‍🟫 (sp. Sparassis crispa) was listed.

I shared the coordinates & details of where I’d found them in that forest. She was very grateful.

Maybe it was karma; I found another one 30min later!

A wonderful assortment of mushrooms popped up over this sunny weekend. We found Kings, Chanterelles and a Cauliflower which we made into a wonderful soup.

As we are in Portland, we had to battle our way past gleeful cyclists to the Whole Foods to pick up the broccoli sprouts.

#sciartseptember prompt: Dream

During REM your brainwaves on an EEG look similar to when you are awake but your body is paralyzed! This state sometimes weaves strange yet meaningful connections.

‘Vernal Dreams’ draws on imagery from a sleep diary & uses sleep data to explore our nocturnal world.

There’s a funny story about the spot where I found this bear’s head mushroom.

‘Qualia’
mixed media on paper

Created this piece over a decade ago. Still fascinated by the question: What’s the redness of red?

The raw, subjective feel of experience.

This piece has a network of white lines and #angles which makes it work for the #BlueSkyArtShow theme.

‘What Emerges in the Night’
mixed media and cold wax on board

Our brains keep working while we sleep, turning over the puzzles of the day and letting new connections and solutions rise to the surface.

Deep sleep, or slow-wave sleep, is a restorative stage in the sleep cycle. It's thought to be essential for memory consolidation. It occurs early in the night and is dominated by slow, high-amplitude delta waves.

Sometimes before dawn, does your mind awaken and refuse to settle?

Insomnia feels like restless moths swarming, with thoughts drawn endlessly to the flickering light of my sleepless mind.

Typically a collaboration with a university might work for a complex tool like an fMRI.

EEGs are not all that complex. But, having a device one can wear throughout the night requires more sophistication.

The below image is from last February.

During REM sleep your mind is highly active (on an EEG it looks similar to awake state) but your body is paralyzed while you slumber.

Messaged a friend that we had luck finding Spring King boletes in the mountains. She mentioned she had just hooked a gorgeous salmon on the river.

Took an evening walk and traded some bounty! 🐟 🍄‍🟫
