If the EU wants to show real climate leadership, it must stop giving privileged access to those blocking climate action. #FossilFreePolitics #COP30

6/ Therefore if its lobbyists can't tick the box, why should TotalEnergies be allowed to attend the UN climate talks in Brazil this November, aka COP30, which are working towards the goals of the Paris Agreement? It openly makes a mockery of the process.

5/ Now that a court has ruled that TotalEnergies' so-called "Paris-aligned" plan of being "net-zero emissions by 2050" is in fact greenwashing, and it's no longer able to claim such things, TotalEnergies is *not* "in full alignment" with "the goals and principles of the Paris Agreement"

4/ Thanks to years of hard work by the Kick Big Polluters Out campaign (which we're a member of), participants at this year's UN climate talks in Belém, Brazil, aka COP30, have to confirm if their participation is in "full alignment" with "the goal and principles of the Paris Agreement"

3/ "net-zero emissions by 2050" was the agreed goal of the Paris Agreement, signed at UN climate talks in 2015, aka COP21.

Since then, many fossil fuel companies, including Total, have adopted net zero plans while continuing with fossil fuel production, but have got away with it (until now).

2/ A three year battle by Fossil Free Politics member @amisdelaterre.org has seen the courts find French 🇫🇷 oil and gas major TotalEnergies guilty of greenwashing, in particular its narrative of reaching "net zero emissions by 20250".

French court convicts TotalEnergies of greenwashing over climate claims
Judges ruled on Thursday that the energy giant had misled consumers by overstating its carbon neutrality goals. The case could set a potential precedent for corporate climate advertising.

[2/3] As Mirjam de Rijk highlights in @groene.nl, citing research from @somoamsterdam.bsky.social & @foeeurope.bsky.social:
💰 Companies raked in billions.
📈 Over 75% of profits went to shareholders.
🔬 Investment in their own businesses & green innovation? Barely there.

The same companies were lobbying tirelessly for billion-Euro subsidies to maintain their competitiveness and as contribution to their green transition.

The report makes it clear: the problem is not a lack of money, but their prioritisation of shareholder payouts over investment.

⚠️ Key fossil fuel facts from the report

Shell distributed 97% of their profits to shareholders, Total energies 86%, and others like Eni and BP provided payouts that exceeded their profits.

Big polluters funnel 75% of profits to shareholders, not clean energy
Research shows that Europe's big polluters have handed shareholders, not clean energy, most of their profits – now they want public handouts

It only shows we need @fossilfreeeu.bsky.social. Also cutting subsidies for fossil fuel companies seems to me crucial too.
