With the demise of Joann’s, there’s lots of recs of WHERE to shop online for fabric but not HOW. I highly rec The Swatch Book and Textilepedia for this — the former with REAL swatches of common fibers and their weave options and the latter for the language and application options to help search.

Other people If you are shooting at a well-known public location, expect other people will know about it too. You might attract attention from others in your cosplay, which is fine for some but may be uncomfortable for others. If you want privacy consider lesser known locations or consider renting a location. Forest vs. trees A beautiful location may not be easy to shoot at (for example, it may be all background and nothing to work with in the foreground, or vice versa). Take our tour phone and take a few pictures at a location and consider how your cosplay and the poses you want will (or won’t) work in that setting.

Cosplay Photoshoots I love finding (and building) cool locations for cosplay photoshoots. The right spot can really help bring a creative vision to life! Always be Lookin’ Seriously, look around when you’re out and about… or better yet go out and purposefully explore places in your neighborhood that might be new. You might come across an environment that fits a character not too far from home! Build your own! Building sets is a lot of fun! It can take some time to accrue a lot of props and decorations so consider how to use a little strategically by shooting tight shots or filling additional space with high volume decor like draped fabric. Road trip Traveling to cosplay photoshoot locations takes a lot more planning but it can really pay off (if you do your research!). Before you go make sure to check things like parking, seasonal availability, need for a permit/permission to shoot etc.

We reserved this DISABILITY ROOM on the FIRST FLOOR because we have a friend with mobility issues” “and motion sickness, so stairs and elevators are both bad. And we had to complain enough to even get another disability room. And this one is on the 9th floor. And has no shower seat.” “Also the other room is on the other side of the building.
