No serious philosophical or scientific discussion about #consciousness or #cognition in general can ignore #phenomenology, because all our knowledge is gained solely through lived experience.
See in particular Aron Gurwitsch’s "Field Theory of Consciousness"👇

A dynamical (adaptive) system 👇 in which its current (knowledge) #state determines input perception (what information or meaning is constructed from it) and the production of an output that best suits the current situation.
The state is historically maintained through the integration of information.

Pattee should also be required reading for politicians and everyone else holding an "office."

The majority don't realize that the reason they are "in charge" is that we, as a group, agree to follow the rules.

An excerpt from Howard Pattee's "The Physical Basis and Origin of Hierarchical Control."

His work should be required reading for anyone who wants to debate the origins of life, cognition and consciousness, free will vs. determinism, or #complexity in general.

This difference between the #physical (operational) and #symbolic (functional) is often overlooked in most contemporary discourses about #life and #mind (e.g. #TAME)

Not *all* life is #teleology.

1993 was also the year when one of the most consequential Systems Engineering Management standards was released:

All its subsequent "improvements" and derivatives never came close to the original.
The definition of #system is prominent in my work👇

I think Umpleby might be referring to the plethora of "process improvement" methods that started "popping up" in the 90s. Here is a brief history of the SW Engineering Institute's (SEI) Capability Maturity Model (CMM) that Google didn't include in its list below

The third "era" of Cybernetics "to promote the evolution of certain social systems in a preferred direction," as Stuart Umpleby envisions in this article from 1997, seems to have never materialized.
We returned instead to the 70s and the mechanization of the mind

Analog "computers" should *not* be able to emulate "Turing machines." At their base, they work with continuous variables in time, not sequences of discrete symbols.
However, the analog brain can do so even if its primary function is #control, not #computation.

There is another dimension to this. Learning is primarily #work that is done internally to get some "results," or intrinsic reward, like in computation, the notorious "aha! moments."
It is not something that is necessarily done to get an external (substantial) reward in the form of matter or energy.

Knowledge is the current #state of the learning system. It is akin to biological #growth in that a memory is #constructed and washed out as layered "sediments."
The state affects both the recursive #learning process (information extraction) and the linear #behavior, or answer to external influences.

Didn't TW Deacon fix the issue of "retro-causality" by replacing it with "that which is missing" right now?
Deacon's 'entention' is, IMO, the same as #information, a difference between what is observed, #perception, and what's missing (expected) #prediction, defined by the system's #knowledge state:

Strictly speaking, the term "synthetic" means something made of artificial material, from scratch. I don't think a naturaly produced carbon-based bacterium with a modified DNA fits the description.

Depends on what you think are the "central principles used in the video."
IMO, life *is* a "self-modifying" (autopoietic) but *is not* a "computational" phase of matter.
Only living matter can evolve and reach a specific living state when it can *perform* computations and build non-living computers.
