#Reasoning IS #Computation, but not all computation is reasoning.
#Life started and maintains itself quite well without any of it.

But on the current US government gutting USAID under the direction of his fellow oligarch, not a peep?

Why is it that all those rich people are very keen to tell others what the "right" thing to do is instead of fixing things in their fiefdom first?

Social networks are incredibly important for democracy. The US example shows they are the only thing that can stop a society from sliding into fascism.
It is interesting to see how not even "X" with all its trolls, bots, skewed algorithms, and a demonstrably fascist owner can suppress the real truth
President Macron: “Europeans, let's wake up!

We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks.”

"Cogito, ergo sum,"-"I think, therefore I am," is a foundational philosophical statement by René Descartes about the human condition.
No other animal or living thing has shown a similar level of awareness about their own "existential" conditions, and only a few can be said to have a mind.

Jackson's Knowledge Argument is invalid because knowledge comes from #experience.
While confined within the room, Mary's experience from "reading books and watching lectures on a black-and-white TV monitor" wasn't "the complete physical truth of colour vision" which includes the experience of color.

An excerpt from Howard Pattee's "The Physical Basis and Origin of Hierarchical Control."

His work should be required reading for anyone who wants to debate the origins of life, cognition and consciousness, free will vs. determinism, or #complexity in general.

This makes perfect sense with the caveat that "silicon hardware" with a suitable "software" will not be able to approach anywhere near the structural and functional complexity and diversity attained by "biological wetware."
In A Signal Through Time, I argue that the emergence of consciousness may be the natural outcome of sufficiently complex systems, whether rooted in biology or silicon.

Analog "computers" should *not* be able to emulate "Turing machines." At their base, they work with continuous variables in time, not sequences of discrete symbols.
However, the analog brain can do so even if its primary function is #control, not #computation.

The problem from the start was the flippant socializing of the word "information" from a theory about #communication signals.

People don't want to believe that these faux pas can percolate, accumulate, & propagate throughout the community, regardless of 'rank held.'

1 clear consequence: redundancy
Many physicists, from John Wheeler to Google Deepmind's Demis Hassabis, have argued that reality is fundamentally made of information. | iai.tv/articles/the...

Wheeler called this "it from bit". But this is mistaken, argues physicist and philosopher of science, Gregg Jaeger.

This may also change after he's done fixing the Canadian economy😀
But then you'll be complaining that he did fix it only to "enrich himself."🙄

"Social #engineering" is a misnomer. It should be called "Social #gardening" because they don't #build something out of raw materials, but rather #cultivate what they are given.

When one thinks about how many different things have to go "right" in the "correct" order for life and intelligence to emerge, and how fragile all this is, one may realize that the living is probably not a very common state of matter in the universe.
And here we go. The most promising attempts to define what's life or to distinguish what's alive from what's not, point to thermodynamics.

This is not because statistical physicists are arrogant, but because thermodynamics is a fundamental constrain
