Clinton has consistently framed Camp David 2000 as: ▪️Israel made a far-reaching, generous offer. ▪️ Ehud Barak was courageous, took political risks, and put everything on the table. ▪️ Yasser Arafat said no and walked away. ▪️ The failure therefore reflected a Palestinian refusal to make peace, not flaws in the process. This became the foundation of the mainstream U.S. and Israeli talking point: Arafat blew it. ✴️ Rob Malley, who was actually in the room, tells a very different story: 1. There was no detailed offer: Malley says there was no map, no written proposal, and nothing resembling a final, implementable agreement. Palestinians were shown vague percentages and verbal ideas. 2. The process itself was coercive: Barak: •sidelined Palestinians for a year, •expanded settlements, •pursued Syria first, •then dragged Arafat into a last-minute, U.S.-designed “pressure cooker” summit meant to corner him. 3. Palestinians were asked to sign away core rights for vague promises: Arafat was asked to relinquish: •refugee rights, •East Jerusalem sovereignty, •borders on 22% of historic Palestine …in exchange for undefined, easily reversible commitments from leaders who were about to leave office. 4. The “generous offer” was a myth — and it was used to blame Palestinians: Malley argues the narrative was politically useful for Israel and the U.S., and it demonized Palestinians for decades afterward. 5. Negotiations didn’t end at Camp David: Clinton’s story makes Camp David sound like the final moment.
