TW: raw meat

Forgive me, father, for I have sinned.

Saw this 1000g A5 Wagyu steak in the supermarket and could not resist.

When I saw this poster I got excited that we were going to get a film about one of the greatest astronomers of the 20th century.

But on second glance, I don’t think Sir Arthur ever hip-fired automatic weapons.

The foodie life has been sidelined since the little one was born, but managed to sneak out with the wifey for lobster ramen at Ebimaru.

Unapologetically decadent!

The first of millions!

The Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) has begun science operations, and I had the pleasure of leading the first night’s observations of the 360-night Strategic Program.

~2000 high-z galaxy spectra exposure, in 0.6 arcsec seeing! #cosmology 🔭🧪

I can’t. I’m not a white man.

(Also, I have had zero past interaction with UMich — never even visited so no idea how I ended up on their mailing list)

Nice have the all the ducks in a row, even if only literally.

You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.

TW: raw meat

Probably the most expensive thing I have ever cooked myself: a pound of A5 Matsuzaka wagyu beef, supposedly the most expensive meat in the word.

So glad I didn't ruin it!

Retails for ~JPY20,000 (~US$130) but I got it for free as a kickback from the 'Hometown Tax' program #ふるさと納税

I’m sorry, Yokohama, but why do you need to showcase your mice to me again?
December 18, 2024 at 8:11 AM
Or if you have more refined tastes and pay a *lot*of taxes, you can send JPY1,000,000 (about US$6500) to one of the Osaka suburbs and get as a gift a spiky bottle of Yamazaki 18 year old whisky.

Off to bed for now but I will put more fun furusato nozei gifts as I encounter them. (4/n)

Some of the gifts, though, are on the outlandish side.

If you were an enthusiast of whiskys from the Mt Fuji area, for example, you might go for the 12-month subscription of 3 bottles of whisky per month (3/n)

There are now comparison shopping sites where one can figure out which charming rural municipality to get bribed by.

Usual gifts might be a case of fruit, frozen beef, local delicacies.

I just scored a 450g A5 Matsuzaka wagyu steak that I'd never buy myself, but as a tax offset, sure! (2/n)

All extragalactic 🔭 have seen figs like this often, but it's probably the 1st time you've seen a *simulation* on this plot!

cosmosTNG is constrained to matched the observed structures at z=2.1 (inc. the ZFIRE protocluster) right in the middle of COSMOS. The physics are the same as IllustrisTNG!

This got a bit lost in the ADS/arXiv chaos of earlier this week, but Chris Byrohl (Heidelberg) has put out our paper on the cosmosTNG sims 🔭.

These are first-in-kind cosmo hydro simulations, that are designed to simulate the *observed* cosmic web at 2arxiv.org/abs/2409.19047

My son is now almost 6 months old and a meltingly adorable and playful little boy.

Is there a German word for the feeling of pre-emptive nostalgia, that he will grow up all too soon?
