Artists should have the freedom to create wherever they want and they should never be pressured to keep their work on any particular platform
Two people talking about Immersivism: 7_11: I think there's a generational gap here. Platform-based work like Second Life was important for early Immersivism, but I don't think that's the trajectory the genre is taking now. Most artists I know work with Unreal and Unity to achieve their desired aesthetic. Using something like Second Life just gamifies the art and is too restrictive. Autonomous artists still want to be in control of their work. With programs like Touch Designer integrating with game engines, we can build complete virtual environments without being subject to platform rules, aesthetics, or the risk of platforms shutting down. The accessibility I'm talking about is stronger when you have these tools. Not making art for someone else's game. That's the shift I'm seeing in the new media scene. Platform-based Immersivism goes against the creative freedom that artists want, which is why I don't see it as the future direction. kgpaints (me): Those are some great thoughts. Yes, I always imagined Immersivism as something decentralized. No central power. Everyone can find one another through the genre name if they want, or they can completely work on their own. That way, no platforms can fight for dominance over it and no tech overlord can tell you what to do. There should probably always be skepticism involved with what an Immersivist does and who they ally with technologically. Fine art will exist in (and be about) video games/the internet and already does. Having a name for it now can help to bring about good discussions to keep people engaged without it crossing a line and turning into propoganda. Immersivism needs art criticism more than any other fine art movement ever could.
