Yes! I had a philosophy professor in undergrad make us engage with these arguments of women's "innate inferiority" as if they're intellectually rigorous or legitimate in anyway, while completely failing to acknowledge the existence of any woman in the field.

It's so fascinating but heartbreaking to see how major social philosphies at the time were impacting Clara's (and surely many others) self-worth. From Schopenhauer's On Women: "Women have great talent but no genius."

Nice! I've yet to find a method book that doesn't unintentionally patronize my adult students. Of all of them, I think the group piano method books cater the best to adult learners. I've moved away from method books in adult private teaching and personalize each lesson to their individual goals.

I learned twentieth century music history as pre- and post- Zero Hour in terms of larger groupings. It’s fascinating how larger social and cultural issues can impact music trends.

It would be interesting to brainstorm what 20th century-now subcategories would be included as larger Eras alonside the others.

Great point! The curriculums I’ve seen remove the standard courses in place of various specialized singular courses. The issue becomes then that students are required to only take some, not all, of those specialized courses, taking away the broad overview they were getting before.

I've seen some universities take this too far and remove the music history curriculum all together. I think the truth is, there is too much history to teach most music students thoroughly in the time we have with them, and that can lead to some unsavory generalizations. Gotta love historiography.

This whole thread brings to mind the amateur vs professional divide, and how the term "amateur" was coopted by the patriarchy to denegrate the work of women who were confined to the domestic sphere.
