Did not expect to find any classical music by women today with record thrifting. So I was extra thrilled to snag this 1980s recording of Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn by pianist Judith Alstadter. 🎵🤩

I remember learning of the “greats” of music history as a young girl in piano lessons. My biggest question then was, why were they all men? Now, my question is what if I had learned about women in music as a child? I can't go back, but I can teach my own students a different way. 🎼🎹

Adaline Shepherd (1883-1950) was a prolific American ragtime composer. She wrote several popular piano pieces in her twenties, but her work fell into obscurity after her marriage and retirement. Even her grandchildren didn’t know she was a composer until a reporter reached out to them in the 70s.

I finished “The Second Ending” by Michelle Hoffman last week. I loved it for its humor, heart, and the powerful message about self-belief and second chances in music. 🎹 Read my full review and find out if you might like it too:
