5/X this spread has one of my favorite passages - a reference to the Oubapo, the use of constraints in my own process: we construct our own ever more ingenious obstacles, traps from which we must devise new pathways by which to escape… I build a lot of boxes around myself and see how they free me

4/x I drew this spread first - I normally draw pages sequentially but did out of order for 2 reasons: 1 it anchors the whole continuous sequence - so I could then do the pages before and after And 2) it was really hard to draw, and the more difficult the drawing the more I can mask gaps in my skills

How I designed this chapter - the sketchmap/thumbs for the page. Text and text reading flow are in green. I used blue for the primary narrative imagery and red are the elements that move backwards in time (the owl and the axe that becomes a butterfly). A lot of fun to figure out! 3/X
