Crushed. Purnell was one of the first people I met when Denverite started in 2016. He invited me to interview his cousin, Charlie Burrell, another jazz legend we lost this year.

Steen was gracious, funny, talented — a hell of a quote. He had a story for every block.

Steen started playing piano at Zion Baptist Church and still performed regularly at Dazzle and other iconic Denver music venues.

My latest: ICE and federal law enforcement just wrapped an operation where they went, unannounced, to the homes of kids who crossed the border as unaccompanied minors. In a memo I obtained, we found there were multiple motives behind the effort...

Federal cops spent weeks tracking young immigrants, was it for their safety, or to make deportation easier?
An initiative obtained by CPR News referred to unaccompanied minors as “targets” and indicates that ICE actually had multiple motives for the effort.

I really loved producing this Colorado Today segment with @kevinjbeaty.bsky.social and his reporting about a new exhibition that's resonating with Denver's Cambodian community. And it's got some sound richness to it. 🎧

Western Slope judge warns ICE to stop civil immigration actions in courthouses
Workers at the Garfield County courthouse say ICE has been a steady presence there, detaining between five and 10 people since January who were either in the courthouse or just outside of it.

Matt, does this dream keep the old plant around? Like, are they playing under the stacks? (The Sol/Soul tie-in is good!)
This should be the #DenverNWSL stadium site.

- Xcel sells land to Cohen for $1, throws in a substantial remediation fund, in exchange for naming rights: Xcel Park.

- PR gold for Xcel energy to invest in underserved neighborhoods (Sun Valley, Lincoln, La Alma) & women’s pro soccer.

I spent time at the Colorado vs the World rodeo this weekend, where I met people who've been coming to Denver for this since they were little. It's also the first big ride of the season; the Denver Coliseum, someone told me, was "our Yankee Stadium."
