I have little doubt that @judgedillard.bsky.social concurs. No mention of Word Perfect, though.

I think a few years ago, I would have thought even 5 minutes would be terrible. But I have grown so accustomed to the 2 minute intro at SCOTUS and come to appreciate its virtue. So I could see using a SCOTUS-style intro at the top of a CA5 en banc and then welcoming the court’s questions.

There will be more! I have one in the works right now that I am especially looking forward to. If anyone has suggestions or thoughts on the podcast, I would love to hear them. Hope you can listen and enjoy!

Finally, Lewis Powell III, longtime Hunton partner and the son of Justice Powell, spoke about what it was like going to law school the son of a #SCOTUS Justice, his time clerking for Judge Robert Mehrige, and how younger lawyers can develop important skills.

Next I talked with my colleague Trevor Cox, who formerly served as Virginia’s Deputy and then Acting SG. Trevor talked about his path to appellate work, lessons learned in #CA4, and why he had to hightail it out of DC immediately after his first #SCOTUS argument.

I was lucky enough to talk with one of the country’s foremost experts in judicial selection, University of Richmond law professor Carl Tobias. Prof. Tobias and I discussed the judicial selection process and how #CA4 has been shaped by different administrations.

This interview with William & Mary Law professor Alli Larsen was really fascinating. We discussed her article “Circuit Personalities,” which studies the unique traditions and norms among regional circuits, and we exchanged thoughts on what makes #CA4 special.

First, I interviewed my friend, mentor, and practice group chair Elbert Lin. We talked about his time as West Virginia’s first Solicitor General, what SGs do, and the difference between #SCOTUS, #CA4, and #WVSCA arguments.

I was dead-set on being a lawyer in DC. Spent both summers there and accepted a BigLaw offer. But then I clerked in Richmond and realized it was where I should be. Absent that twist of fate, no way I would’ve had the path I’ve followed.
