I don't want to read books about awful people doing terrible things. I want to read books about so-so people becoming better, doing things they wouldn't have believed they could do.

I think about how some of the people I know seem to have lives characterized by grief, or joy, or defiance, or hope, or confidence, or some brave combination of all of those, and I realize: I don’t know what characterizes my life. I don’t know how to feel about that.

With literally three different books in various stages of revision, I've made the difficult choice to skip NaNoWriMo this year.

I'm still writing; I'm just not starting a new project. Maybe next year, or Camp NaNoWriMo in April or July.

My phone says it's four o'clock. Fine. Whatever. It could be telling me it's ninety-three seventy on Octoberary the 75th. It doesn't matter. Abbie has made it clear that she doesn't want anything more to do with me. Eyes closed, I replay the few weeks we had together. Our first walk around Lake Mirror, our first, awkward date at Nineteen61, her beating me at mini-golf, our dates at Ax-Caliber and the escape room. The two beautiful nights I spent in her bed. God, was that really three weeks ago? And two weeks since I made the biggest mistake of my life. My eyes fly open. I've made a shit ton of mistakes. Enough to name the memoir I’ll never write The Many Failures of Mike Edwards. Why do suddenly feel like breaking up with Abbie is the biggest? Because you did it on purpose, you dumb fuck. That voice in my head was neither Amy's nor Mel's. That was me. And the me-in-my-head is right. All those other mistakes?

Mike invites me to take the first shot. "Ladies first." I square my hips, trace the imaginary line from my ball to the hole, and swing. It's bad. Like, really bad. I completely misjudge the force I need to use, and the ball pops up and over the side of the green and bounces under a bush. I burst out laughing and look back at Mike, who's trying his best to be polite, but when he sees me laughing, he loses it. I've already fallen in love with his smile, but this is the first time l've heard him laugh, and I almost melt. His eyes squinch shut as he put one hand on his belly and leans over to put the other on his knee, and he drops his ball. It bounces off the sidewalk and rolls into the grass. "Mulligan!" I shout as I dash off to retrieve mine, and Mike picks his up, too, still laughing.

Emily thought about all the Christmases she’d spent with just her mom, and couldn’t imagine growing up in the Bonetti household, with little Felicia running around. The noise. The chaos. The joy. “What were you like as a kid?” Emily said. Felicia laughed. “Absolute fucking chaos goblin.” Emily feigned surprise. “Whaa? I don’t believe you.” “Keep laughing, Halloway. I was the ADHD poster child when I was little. If there was a wall somewhere, I was bouncing off of it.” “Okay, but why are you speaking in past tense?”

She rejoined Emily and enfolded her in her arms. "You're no fun." "It's freezing." "If I turn on the heat, will you get naked with me again?"
