Here's a photo I took of Francis 32 years ago, speaking at the first @naturegenet.bsky.social conference in DC, confirming the rumors that he's heading to the NIH:

In 1968, Pauling's last word on sickle cell was the outrageous suggestion (in the UCLA Law Review) that SCD carriers (and other genetic diseases) should sport their status tattooed on their forehead

Writing in @sciam.bsky.social in 1951, George Gray of the Rockefeller Foundation said Pauling’s discovery could catalyze the search for "a small, innocuous molecule" that could prevent HbS from "misbehaving".
That quest continues…

This is Itano at the Sacramento Assembly center before entering the Tule Lake Segregation Center. Among fellow detainees was a young @georgetakei.bsky.social (of Star Trek fame).
Itano was released after a few weeks at Tule Lake to continue his medical studies.

By rights, the first author should have been Harvey Itano, the gifted Japanese-American physician-scientist who, in the wake of Pearl Harbor, had spent time in 1942 in the Tule Lake internment camp (thus missing graduation).

Pauling’s conclusion was undercut somewhat by James Neel’s earlier note in Science suggesting SCD was a recessive disorder.
Pauling sniffed that “Our results had caused us to draw this inference before Neel's paper was published.”

“This investigation reveals, therefore, a clear case of a change produced in a protein molecule by an
allelic change in a single gene involved in [Hb] synthesis.”

On this day 75 years ago, Linus Pauling published his classic report on abnormally charged hemoglobin in #sicklecelldisease in Science, hence the first “molecular disease”. 🧵

In a 6,000-word guest editorial in The CRISPR Journal, @urnov.bsky.social calls for a #CRISPR revolution of sorts:
