I posted this on X shortly after Trump won. Sadly it aged rather too well.
Another strong response from Senator Penny Wong after Ted Hui also got the same sorts of threatening letters that I received. Ted and I are lucky to have the support of Australian Government and media - when are their UK counterparts … (1/2)

The fact that Americans seem surprised and disappointed with how big US commercial law firms have caved in the face of Trumpist authoritarianism shows how little Americans have noticed how their corporate and legal titans have behaved overseas. Examples from Hong Kong include the following:

Personally I should thank

and

It says a lot for Australian sporting culture that rival fans can mix with together at the stadium and passionately support their respective teams, and then leave and take public transport together after the game without rancour regardless of the game’s r result. #AFLBluesHawks

Islamophobia is a scourge on Australian society (alas a not insubstantial number of Hong Kong migrants that I have come across have Islamophobic tendencies, hence I know first hand how real such prejudices are). It must be tackled and eradicated. x.com/chrisminnsmp...

Thank you to

I have a price on my head. I hope my neighbours won’t try to cash in
This week, letters arrived at homes in Melbourne offering a $200,000 bounty on my head. It would be claimable if I was taken to Hong Kong. In short, the letters call for me to be kidnapped.

Specifically in relation to “who did it” to
@tedhuichifung
and me, note that the Chinese Foreign Ministry threw all manner of diversionary invective but did not actually deny anything. (2/2)

My “no comment” on specific circumstances stands, but I believe that UK’s hitherto tepid responses to similar incidents involving

$200k to betray a neighbour: The Hong Kong letters pursuing dissidents in Australia
The office of Foreign Minister Penny Wong has raised concerns with Chinese authorities after letters appeared on Australian doorsteps offering large sums of money for information about dissidents.

This one hell of an article. And for my part it raises issues about (1) how these myths get used and misused in relation to Hong Kong; and (2) how Chapter III case law in Australia perpetuates these myths and warps how Australian lawyers think about the rule of law.

Mahmoud Khalil is the Voltairean Test of our time. (FWIW I despise his views)

Actually even in self-interest terms Khalil should be defended even by those who have problems with his views. If they can do it to Khalil today, they (or another mob) can do it to you one day too. x.com/meyerlabin/s...

And if you think what the Chinese Communist Party is doing to me is nasty, look at what they’re doing to Ted Hui - they are trying to exploit Australia’s social divisions for transnational repression purposes. Real evil stuff.

I have no comments on this report save for the following:

1. I thank Senator Penny Wong and Senator James Paterson.

4. I will not kill myself.

It’s time major parties in Australia grasp the historic opportunity of luring world class researchers to Australia, a country with academic freedom (unlike China and parts of Asia), good weather and living environment, lower cost of living, relatively safe cities etc.
