One of my first commercial jobs was working at Symbian where one of many horrible jobs I had was to get the IrDA stuff working with PPP. Pretty sure that’s what made my hair go grey in my early 20s.

It’s probably rotted away the ICs as there is no membrane to rot away. Classic Spectrum.

The way I see it is that it's cheaper than the real thing and possibly easier to store, and hopefully at least half as good.

That’s good to know. I have one ready to be installed as a replacement for whichever drive seems less reliable, once I’ve sourced a disk to test which one that is. When I’ve finished removing all the weird goop off the case the next bit will be working out a replacement psu, or service the existing
