It's #FindsFriday!

This lovely belt ferrule dates to the #EarlyMedieval period and was recovered from the Bifrons Anglo Saxon cemetery. It forms part of the KAS collection housed at Maidstone Museum.

Our archivist Craig found something very cool in the KAS library at Maidstone Museum, a copy of the Roman Villa at Hartlip by Charles Roach Smith, F.S.A signed by the man himself!

Can you help us with this mystery object this #FindsFriday? It was found in a possible 17th century house pressed down between a joist and a chimney breast behind a wattle and daub panel. We are going to be undertaking more work to see if it might shed more light on its purpose and origins!

The Tonbridge Historical Society was founded in 1960 to provide a focus for locals with historical interests. It is concerned with national history and archaeology, as well as the history of Kent and the local area. New members are welcome.

The museum displays local artefacts with connections to the Isle Of Sheppey as well as fossils. The museum also has a roof viewing platform with an almost 360 degree vista of the surrounding area.

Happy birthday to the Kent Archaeological Society which was established on this day, 19th September, 168 years ago in 1857!

These two undated photographs show the KAS library hosted at Maidstone Museum in its hayday. We definitely don't mix an open fireplace and precious archives today!

Our offer for #FindsFriday is this lovely 6th century polychrome glass bead. Recovered from grave 137 during excavations at Ozengell, this bead is likely an import dating from at least 580 CE. The grave has been dated between 575 and 675 AD, suggesting it may have already been old when it was buried

Huge congratulations to St. Edmunds School in Canterbury who have been awarded the 2025 Ian Coulson Bursary!

This annual bursary has been established by the Kent Archaeological Society in memory of Ian Coulson. Ian, a former KAS President was Adviser for History in Kent schools for over 25 years.

The group were founded in 1969 in order to promote archaeological research in the Maidstone area, co-ordinate archaeological research and to publish the results of such research.

It's #FindsFriday! Discover an Anglo-Scandinavian copper alloy stirrup mount with a zoomorphic design, found on the Lees Court Estate in 2021. Dating from 1000-1100 CE, this object showcases the use of copper-alloy fittings in early-medieval stirrups.
