#FindsFriday: Curator Andy is cataloguing KARU’s Faversham Western Link finds. This sherd shows a separately pulled handle attached to the vessel. It likely dates to the Late Iron Age or Romano-British periods based on other pottery in the archive, though the site remains unpublished. #PotteryFriday

Knives and the City; Violence, Regulation, and Resistance in Medieval Urban Life
The next in a series of online talks hosted by the KAS, with Jason Hulott, chief instructor at Canterbury Medieval Combat. Exploring knife violence during the 14th to 16th centuries in Europe, highlighting the dual roles of knives as practical tools and weapons of violence. It examines legislative efforts to curb knife crime, the emergence of fighting knives, and the rise of self-defence systems taught through martial manuscripts in response to societal unrest. We will cover reports from major english cities as well as his own research into murders and knife crime in medieval Canterbury. Jason Hulott is chief instructor at Canterbury Medieval Combat. With over 25 years of experience, He specialises in Japanese Iaijutsu and Kenjutsu, and for the past 10 years, been focused on European medieval combat, primarily the German tradition. His training spans military, judicial, self-defence, and sport systems, allowing him to teach a wide range of topics - including Bartitsu and WW1 trench fighting - always with context and practical weapon handling.

It’s #FindsFriday! 🏺 This base sherd from the 1988 Faversham Western Link excavations is a late Iron Age possible press/colander, made from Black Burnished Ware (BB2). Used to separate curds from whey—This could only be confirmed via organic residue analysis. #Archaeology #IronAge #Pottery

The Kent Archaeological Society thanks Kent County Council's Heritage Team and Dana Goodburn-Brown for donating archive boxes. KCC and Dana are digitising the HS1 project archive and have condensed materials, freeing up boxes for KAS's use. We look forward to more progress on the HS1 project!

It's the first #FindsFriday of 2026! While revisiting the 1988 Faversham Western Link Road dig, Andy discovered three Late Iron Age/Early Roman pottery pieces with drilled repair holes. To volunteer with the KAS on our pottery archive, email your interest and CV to andy.ward@kentarchaeology.org.uk.
