While there's no doubt Julie Taymor swung for the fences with SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK, I remain fascinated by what an incredible amalgam of bizarre choices it wound up being against what general audiences would expect from a Spider-Man musical. It plays as both fever dream & comedy sketch.

“Most people don’t believe facts.”

It’s worth a moment to watch the rest of @hodgman.bsky.social’s debut appearance on THE DAILY SHOW for its exquisite timing, timelessness, & absurdism.

I don’t praise lightly, but I praise this fully as the debut of a unique comic voice. TAKE THAT, JOHN.

On this day, 20yrs ago, @hodgman.bsky.social made his debut as a guest on THE DAILY SHOW. From the moment I saw this segment, it was clear what a unique comedic presence & sharp wit he had, and I’ve been truly delighted to see it blossom over the years. Happy Televersary, my friend.

I think we may need to engage with the very real possibility that @gailsimone.bsky.social is an extra-dimensional superintelligence training itself on human responses to its posts…

WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

If you’re only familiar with the more Beatle-esque reworking of Neil Innes’ “Shangri-La” from the RUTLES ARCHEOLOGY album, here he is performing his original version on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. I love the lyrics of this song, the way Neil’s brain worked, & his winking insights into the human experience.

Not a day goes by I don’t miss my pal Neil Innes & wish we could chat again. An amazing human in all the most brilliantly absurd ways, always keen to have a drink & a think & a bit of uke to accompany both. A sweet soul. Here’s a cover he did of his friend George’s song the last time we were together

There have been many attempts at lampooning Elton John over the years, but the brilliance in Neil Innes' approach from RUTLAND WEEKEND TELEVISION is to emulate Elton's musicianship while gently ribbing the oft-times endearingly flowery/nonsensical nature of Bernie Taupin's lyrics...

*Will there be a new Venture Bros. holiday song from @doc-hammer.bsky.social & @jacksonpublick.bsky.social this year? All I can say is that nothing is ever promised… If a festive surprise should appear, appreciate the miracle - But if one doesn’t, you can still appreciate all previous miracles…

Like an emotional revenant, the existential depression of not getting picked for teams in elementary school gym class has returned via seeing friends playing video games together in squads they haven’t invited me to join. Here’s to keeping that outsider fun alive no matter how old you get! Huzzah!

And speaking of Scrooge McDuck and DUCKTALES and anniversaries...
Here’s how to get to get a fancy gold foil Scrooge/DuckTales anniversary print/bookplate to put into your copy of The Art Of DuckTales, if you’re keen on that sort of thing (and I sincerely hope you are, since I wasn't able to go to any conventions this year and have bills to pay)…
