Food at Ettu Restaurant
Three small round plates. One contains olive oil, one has truffle butter and the other basil butter. All three tasted amazing Thin slices of courgette and sweet potato wrapped into what looks like baked roses Pieces of almost raw mackerel on a bed of super small pasta that looks like rice, called fideo. Sprigs of mint poke out of the dish which is surrounded by a yellow sauce Pickled cactus fruit salad. If looked like runner beans chopped into small pieces

On the catamaran

Me and Ronny waiting for the trip to start A catamaran in Cadiz harbour The back of a huge cruise ship. Our boat had to wait until it had left the harbour and then we followed in it's wake A view of Càdiz city wall across the front of the catamaran. The wall was built at the coast to protect the city from invaders. There is a row of holes in the wall where cannons could be fired from. In the foreground there are large red life lifebuoys

Old cannons are used to protect the buildings on street corners from being damaged by the traffic. The streets are narrow and we actually saw a delivery van get stuck and scrape off a chunk of plaster when trying to turn into an alleyway. Here the walls are also protected by an ornate black metal thingy wrapped around the corner on top of the cannon Jesus and Mary are never far from you in this town An alsatian keeps guard over a closed shop Puerto Chico. I just thought it was a cute name for a street

Ronny stands in front of the enormous new cathedral. There's a distinct line running horizontally through the building. When it was started stone from the local seabed was used but as construction was underway it was beset with issues that pushed up the cost. The upper half had to be completed using cheaper limestone. You can see empty alcoves where statues should have been put and the windows are plain. It took 100 years to complete. Regardless the cathedral is really impressive and the turrets are one of the most recognisable features of the skyline Cadiz townhall Cadiz's classic lamps Some of the merchant houses feature wrought iron balconies designed to fit the wide dresses fashionable in the 18th century

Ronny stands at a street corner under a sign with the street name Virgin de la Palma. This suggests Ronny is the virgin of Palma A large abandoned 4 storey building catches the setting sun. A row of palm trees are in front of it. We thought it was a multi-storey carpark when we first saw it. A guide told us it was an orphanage and Google says it's a hospital I prefer the hospital explanation as otherwise there must have been a huge number of orphaned kids in the town Ronny caught the sun on his shoulders today. Looking down into a circular, glass, porthole in the Roman theatre visitor centre. My feet and Ronny's feet are visible and our reflections are in the glass. Beyond the reflection you can see a piece of one of the columns that used to support the upper part of the theatre Cadiz old cathedral looks like a cross between a castle and a rustic farmhouse. The entrance is a large red door surrounded by brick. The section of the building facing the sea has no windows but has a small turret. Why? The English burnt down the original building during one of many attacks on the city. So the first cathedral was rebuilt to look drab so it was less likely to be attacked in the future! An 18th century house owned by a merchant. A grand door surrounded by columns support a first floor balcony of the door. The ground floor was used for storage of goods, the merchant's family lived on the first floor, the servants on the second and the towers on top were used to keep a lookout, and communicate with, incoming ships bringing goods into Cadiz Most merchant houses in Cadiz have been converted into hotels but developers are required to preserve their architectural features A roadside lamp shaped like a trident, with the sea in background and the coastline road in the fore

Cadiz. Starting with the Roman theatre
A 1/3 of the semicircle that was created by the terraced seating facing the stage. Metal arches support the residential buildings which are built on top of what was the stage. The theatre was built from stone taken from the seabed at low tide. Later the same stone bricks were recycled by the Moors and then the Spanish in the 18th century to build Cadiz old town. Underground archway tunnel which served as an entrance to the theatre, which held 10,000 people White buildings flank the theatre seating. The Moors filled in the theatre with sand, stones and debris and the exact location of the theatre was unknown until about 30 years ago during excavations for some new buildings planned for the site. Those were never built and instead archeologists spent 20+ years excavating about 1/3 of the theatre seats and stage. Apart from a few chunks of columns, the stones used to build the upper part of the theatre haven't been found A view of the terraced seating through an arched window in the visitors centre
