I’ve enjoyed photographing the rare native aspen this year. They are often vibrant yellow in early autumn, although this tree transitioned through a beautiful mix of colours.

Early morning atmosphere in Scotland’s Caledonian forest. Missing is the sound of the flowing river and birdsong, along with the earthy woodland smell.

I’m excited to have come first place in the Woodlands category in the @natural-landscapes.bsky.social awards with this photo ‘Remnant of time’.
It was taken on an exceptionally cold morning with a thick frost encrusting the Caledonian forest. Congrats to other winners, organisers and judges. #nlpa

A fine late summer’s morning in the Caledonian forest. The heather was looking amazing but the fog got in the way!

Disorder in the Caledonian forest. Young aspen trees and a birch holding onto its leaves in late Autumn.

The Scottish biting midge can make mornings like this miserable. A headnet for me is the single most useful accessory at this time of year

A few more butterflies from earlier in the week. Must have been over 200 in a few square metres, and 6 species in total. I’ve never seen anything like it outwith a butterfly house! ID in alt text

Nature feels like it is in fast forward this year. The rowan berries are on the local trees already (although some didn’t flower after last year’s spectacle). This is from the dying embers of Autumn 2024 when the leaves subsided to expose the structure of the woodland, and the abundant lichen.

Ancient oak at the edge of a narrow gorge in a small fragment of Scotland’s Atlantic rainforest. It was a haven for wildlife, with a heron and a roe deer on my arrival, neither of which I was fast enough to capture!

A defiant pine shaped by the elements at the upper limits of the Caledonian forest, likely at the edge of the krummholz zone.

An ephemeral moment in the Caledonian forest a wee while back. The foreground clouds were racing across catching the morning light as they passed.

Found some old oak trees around Inverness today, but quite a lot of invasive rhododendron.

Prehistoric
Dispersing fog amongst ancient Scots pines. I have only known these trees for a few years, and to my eye they appear almost identical. I wonder how they would have looked at the time of the moon landing in 1969, or when my great grandparents were born.

That’s brilliant. They just grow anywhere don’t they. Here’s another poor rowan with a short life ahead of it

A fascinating birch trunk found whilst exploring the Caledonian forest. It was hollowed out, mobile, and felt like it had very little weight to it. An interesting selection of mosses and lichen taking advantage. I think maybe Cladonia and ochrolechia?

Sunshine, rainbows and strong winds. It felt quite exposed in the tent but great views over expansive vegetation to wake up to. May 2023
