Me being led on the prettiest yak.
November 7, 2025 at 2:15 AM
Here is the prettiest yak in the county two years running that I paid to "ride" on (a young girl walked me in a circuit of two yards).

Agreed! Can you replicate this maneuver with a dromedary?

Threats against NYC and insane ranting aside, the fact that Trump says that Mamdani is a communist and then says "his principles have been tested for over a thousand years, and never once have they been succesful" really makes me wonder when Trump thinks communism was invented.

N. Jagwaral on need to reform herding in the Mongolian People's Republic.

A delightful carving from the Mongolian People's Republic from 1960 by Namkhaidagwa in the Arwaikheer, South Khangai museum. It shows a cat Buddhist monk who is preaching to his mice parishioners. The anti-cleric and anti-religious message is of course quite clear.

The Assyrian Church is a successor to the Syriac Church of the East. Syriac Christians played a huge role in the Mongol Empire, with adherents both amongst Mongols and non-Mongols, and were interlocutors with the Christian West.

They are often called Nestorians, but this is an insulting term.

Pope Leo met with the Assyrian Church of the East Patriarch Awa, and the Patriarch gave him a Cubs jersey. Leo is a White Sox fan. Some folks assumed he must have made a istake. But the Patriarch was also born in Chicago. So he was 100% trolling his fellow Chicago born Christian leader.

Marmot hunter, Mongolian People's Republic, 1970s. Marmot were heavily hunted, and their skins were listed as part of the 5 year plans. 1,000s of skins were collected annually.

Hunters were seen as professional Marxist laborers with an important role in building socialism, and had clear quotas.

Mangalica pigs, a Hungarian breed notable for their wooly hair, in Mongolia. Pigs are not one of the five snouts (types) of traditional livestock breeds in Mongolia, but both pigs and poultry had increased prominence in the socialist period, and continue to play an important role today.

This journal issue is in memory of György Kara, a brilliant Mongolist who I studied with at IU. He passed away before I defended my dissertation. But he taught me so much about Mongolia and gave wonderful feedback on my research. So at least a fraction of his knowledge lives on.

Veterinarians helped livestock health and spread state power. Apparently a controversial opinion, but vaccines that prevented diseases were good, and saved lots livestock lives! And new sheep breed, especially the Orkhon sheep, were a successful melding of modern vet science and Mongolian herding.

It appears it won't be officially online for sometime, but I don't care. I am excited to say that "Veterinarians, Vaccines, and Hybrids: Veterinary Science in the Mongolian People’s Republic," is out (or will be soon) in Mongolian Studies. Please message if you want a copy! #envhist #animalhistory
