At the end of the day, even if the contract is even in terms of surplus value, the Red Sox still got real value back for it. A meaningful young SP and a top 150-200 prospect. I think there is no way the Red Sox lose this trade on $/WAR barring some insane over performance by Devers.

I agree it depends somewhat on how he ages, but his in-zone contact rate is already dropping and he hasnt posted more than 5 WAR since 2019 (which was a massive defensive outlier). He is not on a tier with Soto and Vlad imo.

As a DH only? Im not sure thats true. Maybe slightly more, but I dont fully buy that.

The Giants have to pay that rate for the remainder of the contract which is much more than he is worth for the remaining 7.5 years. If the market valued him at $30 million a year for 10 years, it must be true that he is worth less than that for the remaining 7.5 years.

The Red Sox agreed to pay him $30 million a year over 10 years. He is most valuable the first year of the contract, with a decline over the lifetime. The Red Sox got the first 2.5 years at that rate, which is less than his market rate would be for those 2.5 years.

They got value back on an underwater contract. I really am having a hard time seeing the downside provided they spend the surplus value gained.

The reconciliation bill is a winning issue for Democrats because it cuts healthcare, immigration is not. Simple as.
