Like I said, part of me is willing to accept this given how unbearably bleak The Long Walk was as an adaptation by the end, and I still haven’t recovered from being so emotionally broken. And let’s be real, Paramount, especially now, was never gonna be that ballsy.

Edgar Wright’s approach to The Running Man as a story is basically what Nick Frost’s character from Hut Fuzz would do. As many of the plot points as there are from Stephen King’s original story, Wright’s affinity is more with the Schwarzenegger film, and playing things more comedically.

In terms of his early film’s I’ll always argue that Predator is Arnold at his most human and vulnerable. He understood what that film was about, especially in terms of breaking down the “tough guy” persona he was a part of popularizing in the 80s. Even him in the choppah at the end shows depth.

It’s a testament to how important screenwriting and directing are, because Arnold has never been a “bad actor” in my opinion. Pair him with the right director and a good script, and he’ll give you a solid performance. This came out the same year as Predator, and it is night and day. . .

I appreciate it for the wild swing! Very little of it actually works, but it’s genuinely trying for something we don’t see in terms of sci-fi/fantasy that mainstream films in North America don’t even try for. Also nice to see Arly Jover as the de facto villain!
