The site has some incredible insect fossils!
An assortment of finely detailed Miocene animal fossils preserved in fine-grained rust-red rock from the McGraths Flat site in Australia, including a) a feather, b) the larva of a phantom midge, c) a dragonfly naiad, d) a parasitoid wasp, e) a sawfly, f) a tangle web spider (with a close-up image of setae on the spider’s leg, g), and h) a mygalomorph spider.

That already happened a long time ago! They’re called “skeets,” and have been since early in Bluesky’s history—it’s a must-know part of the lore! Several names were suggested, but when the CEO attempted to push back against “skeet,” it became enshrined as the only correct term.
A skeet by Bluesky CEO Jay Graber dated April 27, 2023. It reads, “Guys, please don’t let “skeets” stick. The experiment in decentralized naming decisions has resulted in the worst possible term. How about skoots? Can we bring back skoots? Bluesky OGs, help me out here, remember skoots?” The community’s reaction to Jay’s plea cemented “skeet” as the term for a post on Bluesky.

Hidden amongst the flowers of a goldenrod, a jagged ambush bug (Phymata sp.—probably P. fasciata?) makes a meal of an unlucky fly.
A predatory jagged ambush bug—rough-textured and yellow-green with irregular brown markings, and with grasping fore legs like a mantis—sticks its needle-like mouthparts into the carcass of a large, black fly that it subdued among the brilliant yellow blooms of a goldenrod.
