I’ve always told my kids not to freak out over the much fewer, but very loud, “extraordinary” news as those are the only ones that hit the news cycle.
But thousands of good ordinary people doing ordinary good deeds EVERY DAY will never hit the news cycle because “good” doesn’t make money.

I know very few people who paid off any mortgage, including my parents who are in their 80s.
So long as the value keeps climbing, one can always switch to a different home, possibly even a more expensive one, yet lower the payment.
