Also, while I looked into the Matrix-gruel, I found this article about how poorly-behaved US prisoners are sometimes punished by giving them basically the solid version of said gruel — a revolting nutrient-brick called "The Loaf":

So much of human history has involved taking the act of eating — a biological necessity — and making it not only pleasant, but desirable and fun. I just find it hard to believe that the culinary arts would be completely absent from Zion when they've persisted at very bleak points in history, e.g.:

Even putting aside the question of whether that would truly be the only food available, I've just seen too many examples of human culinary ingenuity to believe that SOMEone in Zion wouldn't figure out a way to make it more appealing. Surely there are former chefs among the Real World's awakened?
