The Year I Flew Away by Marie Arnold follows Gabrielle's journey from Haiti to Brooklyn. She struggles and finds a witch to help her, which (unsurprisingly) causes more problems. Front Desk meets The Jumbies!

The Shape of Thunder by Jasmine Warga deals gently with the aftermath of a school shooting. Two former best friends are grieving the complicated loss of their siblings - through time travel. I wasn't sure how this would end as I read. The adults and kids are complex and feel real.

Two years ago my students got me hooked on Keepers and book 9.5 just dropped! I love the change of perspective in this book - it is from Keefe's POV and the descriptions of the forbidden cities is awesome. There is also some great analysis of the culture in between the action.

The Mona Lisa Vanishes is such a great nonfiction book! Lots of characters and timelines to track but the writing is so interesting. One of my students told me about the theft of the Mona Lisa and when I saw this book I grabbed it.

On the Block: Stories of Home, edited by Ellen Oh, is a great way to discover authors that might be of interest to you! This short story collection is cohesive, with the characters interacting from story to story as they narrate the events in their apartment building and build community!

Lindsey Stoddard is always a must-read for me. She has complex characters who all grow and change in some way, and I always get teary at the end of her books. Brave Like That is no different -- seeing Cyrus learn to stand up for what he believes in is so powerful. And the depth of characters!!

Moon Runner by Carolyn Marsden is a great story about friendships growing and changing. Mina discovers she is able to run AND be a "girly girl"- and what it means to her athletic friend. Great symbolism throughout.

One of my students brought in The Story That Cannot Be Told and the cover art grabbed me - when I read the blurb I was very interested. This story about Romania in 1989 blends historical fiction and folktales in a world where no one can be trusted. By J. Kasper Kramer.

No Place For Monsters by Kory Merritt is a great book for horror lovers who don't like to be too scared. It is reminiscent of Last Kids on Earth and has lots of illustrations to support the text. I think it will be a big hit in my 4th grade class!

I loved Jasmine Warga's A Strange Thing Happened in Cherry Hall. A non-violent mystery with complex characters, all in a shorter, easy to read format. And the turtle!

I'm going to try to keep track of the #kidlit I read this year in this thread.

Dogtown by Katherine Applegate has been on my list to read for a long time! I love the dog's point of view and the community that formed throughout the story.
