We let too many big grocery companies amalgamate and conspire to jack up prices. There are still some smaller companies but they either buy from the big ones or they have no need to keep their prices low, since the majority of people have already accepted high food prices.

The trouble is that the people who can do the current job have basically zero overlap with the people who want to be career politicians. Just a totally different set of skills and motivations.

The trouble is that a non-trivial number of people do genuinely corrosive things in order to signal their virtue. A lot of the internet arguments I've seen have been due to one party mischaracterizing another in order to shame the other, and make themself look virtuous.

I do think that it is of use to a society to identify people who are doing things merely to signal virtue that they do not possess. But the way that the right's discourse about this topic has wandered is disgusting and has absolutely led to a breakdown in their ability to value virtue at all.
