just because some great scientists volunteer for journals run by particular publishers, does not mean YOU should volunteer too -- your time and expertise are too valuable to throw away to for-profit publishers. Support society journals and volunteer where benefits stay in the research community!

Not sure how i got so many new followers but it's probably people who like rocks, so here are some plants that also like rocks and even look a bit like rocks.

Goldfield still popping

The party of ones continues at Goldfield....

nobody felt any of these, but just me watching the M1s pop off .... 44 in the last 24 hours, biggest one M2.4, hidden in this NW-trending swath is a dense cluster along a ENE-trending line under Cole Mt. Probably means nothing but I get excited anyway.

Update -- our happy little swarm seems to be a bit quieter today, maybe it's tapering off? the few other earthquakes near by are stretching to the NW of the swarm. The Moment Tensors calculated by Daniel Trugman for the larger events all contain a NW-striking near vertical nodal plane.

this is a little snapshot of an ongoing earthquake swarm near Walker Lake. It kicked off on Friday morning ( Aug 23 2024) with three notable earthquakes in a two hour window (M3.0 M3.3 M4.3). In retrospect, there was a local uptick in M<2 earthquakes here about a week before.

Funny little swarm going on. Did you know that you can see more and smaller earthquakes by checking on your regional seismic network websites, and by changing the settings on the map to show "all magnitudes" instead of only earthquakes greater than M2.5 ? left: >M2.5. right: all.

And here's an annotated version! to answer @geology.bsky.social. Red = deformation features (scaly foliation in the shale, deformation bands in sandstone, the main fault core which is a ~1 cm very fine, very tight cataclasite. Yellow = bedding. Throw ~4.25 m, total dextral reverse offset ~12 m.

What does this recipe make? A food, a potion, perhaps an adhesive?

Aha here's a figure that might be useful, we started with Rick Sibson's descriptions from the Outer Hebrides and added a few more. I hope to get there someday to see original pseudotachylytes that inspired Rick's lifetime of transformative work in the geology of Earthquakes! Please share photos
