The thing is, even for what most (white) people take as their model of effective protest, contemporaneous polling showed that most white people still felt it was harmful to the cause. In other words, the finger-waggers will never approve of a protest, even if it remains nonviolent.
While a majority supported the Civil Rights Act of 1965, a year later 85% of white respondents said civil rights demonstrations hurt the cause of advancing rights for Black Americans.

This suggests that the popular perception of how the movement achieved change is deeply flawed.
