On June 23, 2024, I was on Filicudi in the Aeolian Islands when I noticed a flash on the southern horizon. It was brief and hard to see at first, but 5 minutes later it happened again. I realized what it was and set up my camera, and from 100 km away, I captured a nocturnal eruption at Mount Etna!

Kīlauea Iki, a crater that filled with lava during the 1959 eruption. The hill on the far side is Pu‘upua‘i cinder cone, and behind it, the summit caldera.

Southeast Crater of Etna. This used to be the volcano’s peak from 2021 to July 2024, but was overtaken by Voragine after a series of paroxysms at that crater.
