even in our era of shamelessness "I love Hitler" may prove to be a bridge too far - not everyone is quite as committed to open amorality as JD Vance and friends, after all

Hard to say whether Elon doesn't know better (I didn't) or if he's just gotten good at throwing out the sort of reddit-approved political lines that thrill bright, resentful 18 year old boys. Either way, he's objectively wrong. Many fascists started by making the state smaller.

In fact, one thing authoritarian regimes have in common is that they *often* begin with a drive to strip the state back until it consists solely of its repressive and ideological arms. What's left is anything that can punish dissent (police, military, partisan judges) and enforce loyalty.

It’s the kind of line that I would have eaten up in high school. But that's because I hadn't read detailed accounts of Franco's Spain or Mussolini's Italy or Hitler's Germany or even Stalin and the USSR. I pictured repression in terms of the surveillance state. You know-- 1984.

Across federal agencies right now, people who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere are having tearful conversations about this. One combat veteran told my wife, “I have devoted my life to serving this country and it doesn’t care at all. That counts for nothing. I’m the enemy for some reason”
