benefit of the doubt: maybe it was a short questionnaire. and not for traditional research purposes, so fewer approvals needed. …but some questions seem like they could’ve been answered with a visit to district websites instead of asking an official to respond (5/n)

NYT also sent a questionnaire to the largest school districts for this piece (!). Districts are so, so busy and have to prioritize the resources they spend on external research requests. what’s the benefit for them and their students? (4/n)

I’m not familiar with The Upshot. Their landing page says “Analysis that explains politics, policy and everyday life, with an emphasis on data and charts.” but what kinds of data? data that are representative of whom? (2/n)

For NCES (ED), ESRA outlines the data required for collection & dissemination, with some leeway for additional data needed for COE reporting (e.g., longitudinal studies)

last year’s NCES press release with overview of HS&B:22 and findings: nces.ed.gov/whatsnew/pre...

before the cuts in February, HS&B was scheduled to collect 12th grade data this school year (2025-26)
