🐝Just like us, bees eat different things at different temperatures (who wants soup in the summer?). Bombus bifarius likes to visit a cinquefoil (Potentilla pulcherrima) when it’s cooler, but prefers aspen fleabane (Erigeron speciosus) when it’s warm.

UC to Stop Funding Systemwide Postdoc Program
Established in 1984 to encourage women and minority Ph.D.s to pursue academia, the program has attracted right-wing criticism for prioritizing diverse candidates.

Saw a few talks last week about automated digitisation of pinned specimens. Would like to see how they fare with this beauty.

🌷New Research highlight showcases Arrowsmith et al. (2025), which shows that temperature alone can shift pollinators’ floral choices in diverse plant–pollinator communities. Such thermally-driven species interaction rewiring may have important consequences. ➡️ buff.ly/i5QrFjd

My paper on how daily temperature variation influences pollinator foraging preference is finally out! Spoiler alert, pollinators seem to like different food when it’s warm and cold. besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Temperature influences pollinators' choice of floral partners independently of community composition
This paper presents novel research that empirically demonstrates a direct link between temperature and plant–pollinator interaction patterns, independently of changes to community composition in eith...

One of my favorite parts of writing scientific papers is letting my English major husband read them and circle all the things that aren’t real words and then ignoring all his flags. Currently getting the most flak for “subset” as a verb.

I want to believe that NSF/everyone talking about grant freezes is thinking in terms of worst case scenarios but like……hard not to feel like my fellowship is just getting a second random review for no apparent reason and with a new rubric that no one really gets or knows why it’s a thing?

Oh no I didn’t even think about this part of it yet! Cool cool cool cool cool
As someone who was just about to submit an NSF grant, I am not sure what to with it now and what to do about broader impacts.
Memo directs all NSF grantees to comply with EOs, in particular "this may include, but is not limited to "conferences, trainings, workshops, considerations for staffing and participant selection, and any other grant activity that uses or promotes the use of DEIA principles and frameworks

One of my favorite things about bee researchers is that we all have super tacky “bee” decorations that we all roll our eyes at but still keep all over desks/offices/homes. I regularly drink coffee out of a mug that says “Just Bee Kind” and I hate it but can’t stop using it.
