It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Hard not to notice that this is describing a landscape where public aid is pretty brutally means tested, and thus it's very, very difficult to climb out of the trap of housing/childcare/healthcare if you aren't supremely lucky
This is an insightful but deeply upsetting article about why everyone in the US feels poor, and why the current political situation emerges as a direct result.

Breaking on MSNBC:

Two federal prosecutors have been placed on leave at the direction of the White House after filing a sentencing memo seeking 27 months in prison for a pardoned Jan. 6 rioter who brought illegal guns and ammunition to President Obama's house in 2023.

It's not a law. It's a norm. It can be cast aside at any time. Pure extra-constitutional authoritarian nonsense. Literally, just go to the floor with any judge & swear her in. If the GOP isn't going to honor norms, they don't exist anymore. Act like it.

Macron remarks are notable- some quotes: "We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies."
President Macron: “Europeans, let's wake up!

We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks.”

The problem with giving these Arkansas farmers a bailout is that they will keep voting for the people that will keep hurting bankrupting their farms. Maybe it's time they pick themselves up by their bootstraps and stop asking for help.

Seems to me that if the POTUS can’t be criminally charged while in office because it would be too distracting while he’s serving the country, then he shouldn’t be able to file personal tort actions against one of the world’s largest media companies and its billionaire owner either.

Marco Rubio needs to be asked whether he believes his grandfather who remained in the U.S. after receiving a deportation order from our govt should have been treated the way the father of 3 Marines was treated by ICE this weekend in California.

ASK HIM. Make him confront his lack of character.
So video of this 2012 interview is popping up on other sites. Feels super relevant at the moment. Wait for the moment Rubio gets pinned to the wall about his grandfather’s deportation order…

Take a listen and seriously consider it. While this is not an uncommon practice, I am glad people are beginning to speak up about it.

Terry Moran told the truth about the hateful Stephen Miller. ABC News hid behind the worn-out claim that their journalist failed to show sufficient neutrality—& fired him. “Neutrality” rather than truth-telling has helped deliver a fascist regime—and legacy media capitulating to a despot’s demands.

asterisk because i think we look at that period of stability deeply red rose-colored glasses. when people think prosperity they don’t think “family of six sharing a 1200 sq ft home living largely on canned goods and hand me downs” but that was the reality

The Royal Society could have avoided all of this by applying their *own criteria* for excellence when Musk 1st considered for membership.

Instead they - rather unscientifically - mistook name brand recognition and fortune as indicators of scientific merit.

(The ASA's award to Brooks is of a kind.)
I can't get over the idea that the Royal Society thinks Musk is a scientist.

He is NOT a scientist, either by training or by accomplishments. He is a venture capitalist who has a good nose for which of other people's scientific inventions can be monetized with the aid of government funds.

Washington is full of rule-following valedictorians who were inspired by the West Wing and did Model UN and moot court and studied their heroes and who believe in using government to help people.

That's nice, but you need to learn how to swing on the illiterate bullies who steal lunch money.

Wow! Mariann Budde, the Episcopal Bishop of Washington, had an opportunity & she took it.

Speaking directly to Trump/Vance, she advocates for the LGBT community & immigrants.

“The vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They are good neighbours.”

The look on JD Vance’s face…
