Now I see you already got this advice above. Sorry for the repeat. As a now permanent expat American citizen you can AMA about living in, visiting, or moving to Europe. First tip: you need the passport book, and it must be clear when you will go back (return ticket) or they might not let you in.

If you have a passport card and not a passport book you can renew by mail. Do not leave the states without a book passport. A passport card is useful for maybe going to Canada or Mexico? Maybe? But it’s not worth testing. travel.state.gov/content/trav...
